What does LGBTQIA+ actually mean?

L – Lesbian

Lesbian people feel romantically and/or sexually attracted to people of the same sex – specifically women who are attracted to women.

G – Gay (homo)

Gay or homo is usually used for men who are attracted to other men. The term can also be used more broadly for anyone who is attracted to people of the same sex.

B – Bisexual

Bisexual people are attracted to more than one gender – for example, both men and women.

T – Transgender

Transgender people do not (fully) identify with the gender assigned to them at birth. This is about gender identity, not sexual orientation.

Q – Queer / Questioning

Queer is an umbrella term for people who do not fit into the traditional boxes of sexual orientation or gender identity. Questioning refers to people who are still discovering who they are or who they are attracted to.

I – Intersex

Intersex people are born with physical characteristics (such as chromosomes, hormones, or reproductive organs) that do not fit into the standard definitions of ‘male’ or ‘female’.

A – Asexual / Aromantic

Asexual people experience little to no sexual attraction. Aromantic people experience little to no romantic attraction. Both identities are independent of gender.
