🌍 Full gender equality is still 123 years away – but the gap is closing

According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2025 by the World Economic Forum, nearly 70% of the global gender gap has now been closed – the biggest progress since the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet full gender equality is still estimated to be 123 years away.

The biggest gaps persist in power and decision-making, but the good news is: countries that invest in equality are seeing real results.

What works to close the gender gap?

1. Political quotas

Power remains the most unequal space.
Only 27.1% of parliamentarians worldwide are women, and just 22.9% of government ministers.

Countries that use gender quotas – such as requiring a minimum percentage of women on electoral lists – see much faster growth in female leadership. Diverse leadership leads to better, more inclusive policies.

2. More women in leadership through board mandates

While women represent 40.2% of the global workforce, they hold only 28.8% of management positions.

This gap will not close on its own. Deliberate actions, such as board diversity mandates or inclusive leadership development, are essential to support women’s advancement.

3. Digital inclusion in AI and STEM

In fast-growing sectors like tech, the gender gap is even wider. In 2021, women made up:

32% of AI and data professionals
• 20% of engineers
14% of cloud computing roles

Without intervention, these gaps will lead to structural inequality in tomorrow’s technology, and increase the risk of bias in the algorithms shaping our economies and democracies.

Gender equality isn't a cost – it's an economic opportunity

Countries like Rwanda, the United Arab Emirates and Norway show that investing in gender equality pays off. They are seeing higher labor participation, greater innovation, stronger governance and more economic resilience.

The data confirms that gender equality is not just a moral imperative, but also a smart economic strategy.
